Below is a screenshot from my animation work in progress. I am still in pre-production and am in the process of blocking scenes. I am at the point where I need to get some rigging and animation up and running in Unreal Engine 5. There’s so many ways to go about animating your character in UE5!
For this setup, I used an animation starter pack as a base and then modified the animation as needed. The animations in this pack are blueprint driven so I started by recording the animation sequence from one of the pack’s blueprints so I could use it in Sequencer. From there, I added the animation sequence to a character in Sequencer and baked the animation to the control rig I had previously created for the character. The control rig blueprint I created includes the backward solve nodes which enables the ability to bake animation from animation sequences. I added a non-destructive additive layer in Sequencer to animate on top of the existing animation sequence.
Below are some tutorials I found extremely helpful as I try to learn how and when to use all the different animation tools in UE5. Epic Games has done a great job of pulling a variety of learning resources together in their new Learning Library. And, of course, a big thank you to all the YouTube tutors as well. I would have never made it this far without countless hours spent glued to YouTube 🙂

In-Engine Animation For Virtual Production: Introduction
Even though this tutorial is for Unreal Engine 4.26 it covers a number of ways you can use control rigs to animate in Sequencer. I think the phrase ‘Virtual Production’ in the title may mislead folks a bit as the content of this tutorial is very much about using control rigs to animate in Sequencer.
Introduction To Creating And Modifying Control Rig
This is another good tutorial for getting started with Control Rig in UE5. The instructor, Sonali Singh, has her own YouTube channel with a number of her tutorials focused on getting started with control rig in UE. Sonali does a great job of taking you step-by-step through a process.Â
