Robots Blossom – Project Update 015
Lighting, Rendering, Color Grading
I was able to check off most the the tasks I mentioned in my previous post. Animation fine-tuning, check. Final camera cuts, check. Applied voice effects to rerecorded dialogue and added dialogue to Unreal Engine 5 Sequencer, check.
I did pause on starting jaw animation and syncing dialogue. Instead, I took some screenshots from UE5 and brought them into DaVinci Resolve to do a quick color grading test. As expected, all the shots are blown out and hard to work with (at least for my rudimentary color grading skillset). It was important to get a feel for how hard the screenshots would be to work with so I can make the necessary lighting and post process volume adjustments in UE5 prior to final render. So, all in all, I believe it was time well spent and a good trade off of tasks for the day. Tomorrow, jaw animation and dialogue syncing.
Quick reminder, I am using the ACES standard for color management. Please refer to the tutorial below. I mentioned this tutorial previously when I was starting my ray traced lighting setup.
The screenshot below is from DaVinci Resolve. You can see that I brought in screenshots and started color grading a couple of them. It did not go well. I was 99% sure I was going to have to tone down my lighting and post process volume settings in UE5. That assumption is confirmed. Additionally, I may look for a couple more color grading tutorials for DaVinci Resolve. I do want to be much more proficient when it comes to color grading.
Also, surprise! It’s not your imagination…some elements in the screenshot have been blurred out. I have reached a point in the process where I don’t want to give too much away. I really want folks to be able to see my work for the first time without preconception, or something artsy thing like that.

Unreal to DaVinci Resolve Workflow – ACES & sRGB
Speaking of William Faucher, this tutorial is from his YouTube channel. The tutorial does a great job of covering ACES setup in UE5 as well as tips for Movie Render Queue settings. This tutorial is also great for learning a basic color correction workflow in DaVinci Resolve.
